Hispanic Overview

•Virginia's Hispanic population has grown more than 59 percent in eight years, including a burgeoning presence in Chesterfield County and other parts of the Richmond area, according to population estimates released May 14, 2009 by the U.S. Census Bureau through July 1, 2008.

• The estimates show the Latino community growing at a rate of 4.5 percent, for an estimated total statewide population of 531,496.

• Chesterfield leads the region in the growth rate for the Hispanic population, with an increase of more than 135 percent in eight years and a total of nearly 18,000 people, or 5.9 percent of the county's estimated population of 303,469.

• The City of Richmond's Hispanic population grew 95 percent in the same period and now accounts for nearly 5 percent of the city's population at about 9,900 people. Prince George County, with just more than 36,000 residents, has an estimated 2,431 Hispanic people, or 6.7 percent of the population.

• WVNZ/AM ‘Selecta 1320 ’ is the #1 Hispanic platform in the region with a Tropical/International Hits format. The tower is located in the heart of Chesterfield County's Hispanic population, and the signal blankets the heaviest Hispanic-populated areas of greater Richmond.

• WTOX/AM 'La Gran D 1480' is a Regional Mexican station, playing the hottest current hits with news, sports, including the 2010 World Cup, talk and community information.
